JUNE 27, 1969 DEATH OF A LEGEND: Judy Garland

GarlandWhere troubles melt like lemon drops

away among the chimney tops

Having struggled with pills and booze since her teenage years of studio contracts, movie star Judy Garland, at age 47, finally succumbs to an overdose on barbiturates.

Famous for her songs of hope and despair including the legendary anthem above, her tragic death galvanizes her star forever, particularly in the Gay Community where to be a “Friend Of Dorothy” was code for gay people in that generation unable to come out of the closet for fear of both their livelihoods and their lives, themselves.
